Our Past Campaigns

A Sustainable Engergy Future
We strongly believe that Oregon could take the lead in the burgeoning renewable energy industry, which includes wind, solar and biofuels. During the 2005 Legislative session we backed the Fair Energy Bill (SB 527A), which would have made renewable energy a priority in the planning and development of new energy facilities in our state. more...

Healthcare Reform
Our national heathcare system is broken. Forty-three million Americans are uninsured and millions more are inadequately covered. more...

Privacy, Civil Liberties and Equal Protection
Government and corporate intrusion into our private lives has increased at an alarming rate during the last several years. This trend threatens our basic freedoms including our civil liberties and our constitutionally protected rights to privacy and equal protection. more...

Our Democracy
We are increasingly concerned about the integrity of our electoral mechanism and the big money upon which our elected representatives have become dependent. The City of Portland is part of a national movement to free public campaigns from reliance on special interest money. more...

Consumer Protection
Corporate-owned utilities are state-protected monopolies that provide an essential commodity. They are driven almost entirely by the profit motive. It is the job of the Oregon Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to protect energy consumers and uphold the public interest. However, we find the PUC needs repeated prodding. Last year, we successfully opposed the sale of Enron's PGE to Texas Pacific Group, because we believed it was detrimental to the public interest. more...

Our Schools & Other Public Institutions
Our public schools are also precious assets under attack. The No Child Left Behind Law is an un-funded mandate that forces Oregon and other states to divert resources into programs of questionable benefit. Congress continues to slash funds for low interest student loans, Title I and Head Start Programs. And our state has been under-funding public education for years. more...

Our Environment
A clean and healthy environment is a precious public asset. We believe it is worth fighting for. During the 2005 legislative session, we joined with the Oregon Environmental Council and OSPIRG in the Clean Car Campaign to reduce new car global warming emissions, similar to that recently legislated by the state of California. more...

Prosperity and the Value of Labor
An increased minimum wage is not only fair but has been found to be a win-win for both employers and employees, contrary to big business spin. It provides a major economic stimulus that 'lifts all boats' by putting more cash in the hands of consumers. more...

Livable Communities & Smart Development
Growth and development are important components of Oregon's economic engine. This engine is fueled in large measure by our tax dollars. We believe that development should have broad based support and yield benefits to the residents of Oregon—not just the well-connected and well-financed few. Some of the development projects we oppose are ill-suited by virtue of their location, while others are likely to cause significant economic and/or environmental damage to our state or to the communities in which they are located. more...
