Act now to protect valuable, vanishing rural Land

Oregon FarmlandNOTE: This page is for Multnomah County residents. If you live in Washington County, please use our special Washington County action page.

You have a chance to help ensure that our beautiful and threatened forests, hills, rivers and streams, and agricultural lands are not turned over to development in the coming years. Here’s how:

An unprecedented coalition of conservation and farming organizations — Washington County Farm Bureau, Tualatin Riverkeepers, Save Helvetia, Audubon Society, 1000 Friends of Oregon, Oregon Association of Nurseries, Coalition for a Livable Future, Oregon Council of Trout Unlimited and others — have worked together to propose an alternative to the Washington County Commissioners’ proposal that is the current option for implementation. Where the Commissioners would give preference to developers who seek to carve up our limited remaining rural lands, the Coalition’s proposal would balance the needs of the entire County: future development for homes and businesses, equally with the need to protect wildlands and agricultural areas.

The designation of reserves is a critical step. Lands designated as “urban reserves” become eligible to be included inside the Urban Growth Boundary, making them eligible for development as housing, commercial or industrial areas. Once an area is placed within the UGB as an urban reserve, the opportunities for restoring it to its original rural designation is effectively lost.

Metro's comment period has closed, and now were asking you to contact your county commissioners to support the coalition's proposal.

Multnomah County has a voice in This decision. Please Contact the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners.

To ensure that the final urban reserve request is balanced between sustainable land use and the demands of developers, your voice needs to be heard. Review the map prepared by the Coalition to see their balanced proposal for urban and rural reserves.

You can get more information at Metro’s Urban & Rural Reserves page. Also, the Oregonian recently published this article on the farmers working to preserve rural lands.

Please contact the following officials and tell them to adopt the plan submitted by the coalition to balance rural and urban needs.
